Fire Base Overview

The bulldozer in the center is removing trees and other plants from around the fire base to provide clear fields of fire during a ground attack. It pushed up a berm around the base where the infantry built their bunkers and berms for each gun inside the base and extra dirt piled for future sandbag filling.

The infantry unit assigned to the base built primitive dug outs in the berm while we built substantial bunkers. Likely they spent each day walking thru jungle and swamp and had guard duty at night so they had little time for construction work. Often the infantry unit spent the following night in another fire base and had little incentive to improve a base to which they might not return. We spent the day inside the base and worked to improve the place so we had better structures and more comforts.
