Bob Kelly is spreading a petroleum-based soil binder that covers his hand and lower forearm in a “black power” salute. Bob resisted military authority every moment by working slowly and doing exactly as ordered, not a bit more. He was reduced in rank, fined every dollar allowed by military law and given the worst details but punishment did not change his ways. Officers tired of his act but never found a way to get his attention.

People tended to group by race and the groups pressured members to conform. Bob mixed with everyone and kept self-imposed segregation at a minimum. Knowing him forced me to confront my racial prejudices, making my life better today. Forced integration taught many people to change their racial attitudes.
