Heat, humidity, endless labor and isolation made days in a firebase miserable, but staying was better than getting on those helicopters. Infantrymen had no idea where they would sleep after work, so took every individual possession when leaving in the morning. Tank and APC (armored personnel carrier) troopers used their machines to transport luxuries but infantrymen carried everything. Heat and humidity penalized them for each extra pound carried.
